Recap: From Roosevelt to the Stars– A Conversation with Dr. Jonny Kim 🚀

Last Tuesday, a group of TK, 1st, and 5th-grade students had a truly out-of-this-world experience at Ad Astra Day at Santa Monica High School. They joined a live broadcast with NASA astronaut Dr. Jonny Kim, a Samohi graduate, who spoke to students directly from the International Space Station!

The experience was unforgettable. Our students were welcomed like VIPs, receiving thunderous applause as they entered Barnum Hall. NASA even delayed the transmission just so our littlest learners could be seated—talk about red carpet treatment!

Thank you to everyone who played a role in making this event a success:

  • Volunteers: Your support as chaperones ensured a safe and enjoyable experience for our students.
  • Teachers: A special thanks for submitting questions for Dr. Kim. Hearing our students’ curiosities represented in such an inspiring conversation was truly meaningful.
  • Classroom Participants: We also extend gratitude to all staff who participated from their classrooms by viewing the live stream with their students. Your engagement brought this event to life for everyone.

This was an extraordinary opportunity for our students to see the limitless possibilities ahead, fostering curiosity and wonder. From tiny hands holding onto big dreams, this moment showed our students that they, too, can reach for the stars—just like Dr. Kim.

The sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the beginning!

  • Studies show that children perform best in their familiar classroom environment compared to unfamiliar testing settings.
  • Punctuality matters! Students arriving late will be unable to join their class for testing and may have to test elsewhere.

CHARACTER TRAIT FOR THE MONTHS OF MAY & JUNE: PERSEVERANCE

Book of the Month: Uncle Jed’s Barbershop by Margaree King Mitchell

Talking Points for Uncle Jed’s Barbershop

Focus Phrase: Roosevelt students try their best at all times and continue trying, even when things seem difficult.

As we move into the final stretch of the school year, our spotlight shines on the powerful trait of perseverance—the strength to keep moving forward, even when the odds are stacked against us. This month, we’re bringing that message to life through the inspiring story Uncle Jed’s Barbershop by Margaree King Mitchell.

In the book, Uncle Jed dreams of opening his own barbershop. But life throws him challenge after challenge—from segregation to the Great Depression—yet he never gives up. His unwavering determination reminds us that the journey may be long and difficult, but with patience and perseverance, dreams can become reality.

Uncle Jed’s story is a meaningful way to help our students see that setbacks don’t mean stop. Whether they’re working through a tough math problem, navigating a friendship, or chasing a personal goal, they can draw strength from his example and keep pressing forward.

Let’s use this story to encourage our Roosevelt students to be resilient, stay focused, and remember that every small step forward matters. Together, we’re building a culture of perseverance—one lesson, one story, and one student at a time.

SCHOOL RULES REMINDERS

As we strive to maintain a positive and focused learning environment at school, we want to remind you of a couple of important school rules:

  • No Candy and Toys: Please ensure your child does not bring candy or toys to school. These items can distract and disrupt your child’s and their classmates’ learning process.
  • Technology Device Policy: We kindly ask that all technology devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles, remain in your child’s backpack while on school grounds. This helps minimize distractions and ensures that our students are fully engaged in their learning activities.

We appreciate your support and cooperation in reinforcing these school agreements with your child. Working together can create a positive and productive school environment for everyone.

FORGOTTEN ITEMS

Our Main Office does NOT accept forgotten items left at home! This includes homework, backpacks, water bottles, lunches, outerwear, instruments, etc. If your child forgets their lunch, we will provide him/her with a free lunch from the cafeteria.  It is important for your child to experience the natural consequences of having forgotten an item they were expected to bring to school. This is a great way to learn and nurtures a sense of responsibility and independence.

Let’s continue to support and encourage our students as they engage in these exciting opportunities for learning and exploration.

With appreciation,

Dr. O!
