Hello, Roosevelt Families!
Fall is in full swing at Roosevelt! Our classrooms are alive with curiosity, creativity, and the kind of joyful learning that makes this time of year so special. As students dive deeper into routines and challenges, it’s been amazing to see their confidence grow — and it’s clear that your partnership plays a big part in that success.
Thank you for continuing to stay engaged, connected, and supportive as we move through the heart of the school year together.
Open and consistent communication helps us work as a true team in supporting every child. To make that easier, we’ve established a Communication Flow Chart so you’ll always know who to reach out to for questions about academics, social-emotional support, or anything else. You can expect a staff response to emails within 24 hours, and for anything urgent, please call the main office— we’re here to help!
🚗 Morning Drop-Off and Afternoon Dismissal Safety
I want to take a moment to address an important community concern about traffic safety during both morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up at Roosevelt. We’ve seen increased congestion, double-parking, and unsafe crossing behaviors that put our students—and others in the community—at risk. The safety of our children is always our top priority, and we need everyone’s help to make these times of day safe and smooth.
Please remember to:
- Follow posted parking and traffic signs and avoid double-parking or blocking driveways.
- Use designated crosswalks when meeting your child or crossing Lincoln.
- Pull forward and move along promptly when dropping off or picking up students to keep traffic flowing.
We’re also taking steps on our end, including increasing supervision at key gates, communicating expectations regularly, and partnering with the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Division to help monitor and support safe traffic flow.
Most importantly, let’s all be mindful of how we show up for one another during these busy times. Our children are watching us—they take cues from how we speak, act, and respond. We are their first role models, and the way we treat others, especially under pressure, sends a powerful message about respect, empathy, and community. Please be courteous, patient, and kind with one another as we navigate drop-off and pick-up together. A small adjustment or a moment of grace can make a big difference.
✨ Parent Connect @ Roosevelt
A huge thank-you to everyone who joined us for our first Parent Connect @ Roosevelt session last week! Between the two sessions — one after drop-off and another in the evening on Zoom — nearly 75–80 families participated in the conversation on reading during Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Ann Carey, and 5th Grade teacher, Mr. Mike Ostrom’s, engaging presentation, “Floating Into a Love of Reading.”
The feedback from participants was glowing, with comments such as:
- “Well done, teachers—very succinct, informative, relevant, and thorough! Dr. O, thanks for providing this workshop. As a fellow elementary teacher and graduate instructor… excellent choices and focus. Inspiring, encouraging, and facilitating that love for reading is the key to launching lifelong readers!”
- “Thank you so much for taking time out of your non-working hours to make this accessible for as many as possible.”
- “This was great—it just illustrates what a high-level school we’re privileged to be at.”
“Format and time were perfect! Time is essential and scarce, but I’d make time again to attend because the content was very relevant, targeted, and informative!”
These sessions are a wonderful way for families to deepen their understanding of our instructional practices and strengthen the home–school connection that helps students thrive.
If you missed it, you can watch a video of the session here.
We’re thrilled to announce that our next Parent Connect @ Roosevelt will take place on Tuesday, October 28, with two sessions again — one at 8:40 a.m. in the auditorium and one at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom. This allows parents to choose the time that works best for them. Both sessions will include opportunities to ask questions and engage with our team. Click here to sign up! This time, we’ll be exploring Math Instruction Across Grade Levels, featuring special teacher guests Ms. Jauregui, Ms. Pirri, and Ms. Alexander. You won’t want to miss it!
At home, I encourage you to continue talking with your child about how they’re practicing GRIT — whether they’re showing respect, pushing through challenges, or reflecting on their growth. These small daily conversations build confidence and connection that truly make a difference.
And don’t forget — Pier Pleasure is happening this Tuesday, October 14, at the Santa Monica Pier! It’s one of our favorite Roosevelt traditions and a beautiful reminder of the vibrant, caring community we’ve built together.
Thank you for being such an essential part of our Roosevelt family. With your partnership, this school year is already off to an incredible start—and the best is yet to come!
In partnership,
Dr. Amy Onyendu

10/16 – Great California Shakeout
Schools across the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) will join thousands of school districts, colleges, and businesses across California to participate in The Great California ShakeOut Drill at 10:16 a.m. on Thursday, October 16. The earthquake and emergency preparedness drill will provide schools with an opportunity to review earthquake drill procedures, test the emergency communications system, and practice evacuation protocols to ensure students and staff are prepared for a major earthquake or disaster.
How Schools Will Prepare:
- Before the drill, teachers will lead age-appropriate discussions with students about recommended actions during an earthquake and the safety procedures to follow after the shaking stops.
- During the drill, students will practice the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” technique and then evacuate their classrooms. Some schools may also conduct building evacuations, search and rescue walk-throughs, parent-student reunification drills, and radio check-ins with the District Office. The goal is to improve and refine emergency preparedness practices and communication to ensure the highest levels of safety for all students and staff.
- At the District Office, staff will participate in evacuation procedures with the City of Santa Monica to evacuate safely.
How to Practice Earthquake Preparedness at Home:
Families are encouraged to practice earthquake preparedness at home by developing and reviewing emergency plans. Additional resources to consider include:
- Great Shakeout website – Information on the Great Shakeout planned for Thursday, October 16.
- MyShake App – MyShake delivers ShakeAlert®-powered earthquake alerts across California, Oregon, and Washington. The app is available on both iOS and Android platforms, in addition to providing detailed information.
- Santa Monica’s Emergency Preparedness Resource
- Earthquake Safety Video
10/17 – Hispanic Heritage Community Festival
Join us on Friday, October 17, from 3:30–5 p.m. in the Auditorium for music, dance, art, and literature that honor the rich history, diverse cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Families and students will have opportunities to explore traditions, enjoy food, hear stories, and participate in hands-on activities that build belonging and foster inclusion.
10/17 – PARENT VOLUNTEER TRAINING
One of Roosevelt’s greatest strengths is its active and supportive parents. Volunteering on campus creates a sense of community, family, and belonging; students benefit from it when parents/guardians get involved at school. We welcome the support in building a community that supports students and learning.
The next Parent Volunteer Training session with Ms. Warren will be on Friday, October 17, at 8:40 a.m. in the Auditorium.
10/22 – Roosevelt RevUP
Mark your calendars! Our very first Roosevelt RevUP of the year is happening on Wednesday, October 22, right in the heart of United Against Hate Week. This RevUP will be an inspiring celebration that shines a spotlight on kindness, empathy, inclusion, and community. Families will get to witness students living out our GRIT values in real time and see how these principles are shaping classrooms into spaces of connection and growth. It’s going to be a meaningful, high-energy start to our year of RevUPs — you won’t want to miss it!
10/23 – PICTURE DAY
Say Cheese! Picture Day is Thursday, October 24th. Your child’s portrait is something that both of you will cherish for years to come, so I encourage you to dress your child appropriately and remind them to bring their best expression!
10/31 – HALLOWEEN PARADE
We’re thrilled to invite all Roosevelt families to our annual Halloween Parade on Friday, October 31, at 9:00 a.m. on the Big Yard and field! TK–5th-grade students will show off their creative costumes in this beloved tradition. Families are welcome to attend — please enter through the Upper 9th Street Gate between 8:40–8:55 a.m. and remember to bring your visitor badge or check in at the gate.
Students may wear costumes to school (no scary, gory, or culturally insensitive themes), and masks or face paint are allowed during the parade only. After the fun, students will return to class for a regular day of learning—with a touch of Halloween spirit! 👻

LOST & FOUND SHED
We have quite a collection of items in the Lost & Found Shed located behind the Coach’s Office near the Upper 9th St. gate. Please be sure to check the Lost & Found anytime during dismissal. We have lots of water bottles and lunch bags!
IMPORTANT PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF SAFETY REMINDER
The safety of our students is our top priority, and we want to ensure that our pick-up and drop-off procedures at the school gates are as safe and efficient as possible. With that in mind, we would like to remind everyone of the following safety guidelines:
- Lincoln and 9th Street are for loading/unloading ONLY. Keep circling until you see your child. Do not wait at the curb. Do not leave your car and go look for your child.
- No Double Parking: Do not double park your vehicle. This obstructs the flow of traffic and can create hazardous conditions.
- Mind the Crosswalks: NEVER drop your child off on the opposite side of the street. Be especially cautious near crosswalks and pedestrian areas. Always yield to pedestrians and allow them to cross safely.
- Be Patient & Set a Positive Example: As parents, your behavior sets an example for your children. Please be patient and considerate of other parents and guardians, while modeling safe and responsible driving practices.
- Please be mindful that the Staff Parking Lot is for Staff Only. Entry and exit are prohibited from 2:45 – 3:15 p.m. daily.
