Principal’s Message

Hello, Roosevelt Families–

Fall is here, and Roosevelt is buzzing with energy! Our students are settling into routines and showing Growth, Respect, Integrity, and Tenacity (GRIT) every day — whether tackling challenges, collaborating in class, or supporting their classmates. Their excitement is contagious!

We’ve already shared some wonderful community moments this fall, from the Groundbreaking Ceremony celebrating the start of construction for our new Early Childhood Learning Building and Library, to our Back-to-School Picnic, and the return of Popcorn Fridays. Each of these events has been a joyful reminder of how special it is when our Roosevelt community comes together — thank you for making them so memorable.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to kick off a brand-new series for families: Parent Connect @ Roosevelt — a chance for parents and caregivers to learn with us, connect with staff, and get a closer look at the amazing work happening in our classrooms. Our first session is Tuesday, September 30, led by teacher guest speakers Ann Carey and Mike Ostrom, who will share insights on Reading Workshop. To best meet the needs of our families, we’re offering the same session twice: once in-person at 8:40 a.m. in the auditorium and again at 6 p.m. on Zoom. This allows parents to choose the time that works best for them. Both sessions will include opportunities to ask questions and engage with our team. Click here to sign up!

We’re also celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! Join us on Friday, October 17, from 3:30–5 p.m. in the Auditorium for music, dance, art, and literature that honor the rich history, diverse cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Families and students will have opportunities to explore traditions, enjoy food, hear stories, and participate in hands-on activities that build belonging and foster inclusion.

Our first Roosevelt RevUP of the year will take place on Tuesday, October 22, during United Against Hate Week. This special RevUP will highlight and celebrate the importance of kindness, empathy, inclusion, and community. Families will see examples of GRIT in action and experience how our classrooms are living these values every day.

And we can’t wait for Pier Pleasure, our signature Roosevelt event! Families will have exclusive access to Pacific Park for an evening of unlimited rides, games, and fun—just for our Roosevelt community. It’s a magical opportunity to make memories together, enjoy the rides and attractions, and connect with friends in a festive, private setting. Tickets are on sale now

Finally, I want to remind you that both the PTA and I are here to support YOU! If you have an idea for a new event, or if you’d like to see even more opportunities for families to connect on campus, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out and consider joining the PTA — it’s one of the best ways to help us continue building a strong, connected Roosevelt community.

Here’s to a season of growth, joy, and connection! 🍂

In partnership,
Dr. Amy Onyendu

IMPORTANT PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF SAFETY REMINDER
The safety of our students is our top priority, and we want to ensure that our pick-up and drop-off procedures at the school gates are as safe and efficient as possible. With that in mind, we would like to remind everyone of the following safety guidelines:

  1. Lincoln and 9th Street are for loading/unloading ONLY
    1. Keep circling until you see your child.
    2. Do not wait at the curb.
    3. Do not leave your car and go look for your child
  2. No Double Parking: Do not double park your vehicle. This obstructs the flow of traffic and can create hazardous conditions.
  3. Mind the Crosswalks: NEVER drop your child off on the opposite side of the street. Be especially cautious near crosswalks and pedestrian areas. Always yield to pedestrians and allow them to cross safely.
  4. Be Patient & Set a Positive Example: As parents, your behavior sets an example for your children. Please be patient and considerate of other parents and guardians while modeling safe and responsible driving practices.
  5. Please be mindful that the Staff Parking Lot is for Staff Only. Entry and exit are prohibited from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. daily.

9/29 & 10/17 – PARENT VOLUNTEER TRAINING
One of Roosevelt’s greatest strengths is its active and supportive parents. Volunteering on campus creates a sense of community, family, and belonging; students benefit from it when parents/guardians get involved at school. We welcome the support in building a community that supports students and learning.

The next Parent Volunteer Training session with Ms. Warren will be on Zoom on Monday, September 29, at 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday, October 17, at 8:40 a.m. in the Auditorium.

10/6 – LOCKDOWN SAFETY DRILL
A Lockdown Safety Drill is scheduled for Monday, October 6th, at 1:20 pm. Our teachers are reviewing the Lockdown Safety Drill procedures and the Age-Appropriate Talking Points with their classes beforehand.

10/2 – NO SCHOOL (LOCAL HOLIDAY)

10/23 – PICTURE DAY
Say Cheese! Picture Day is Thursday, October 23. Your child’s portrait is something that both of you will cherish for years to come, so I encourage you to dress your child appropriately and remind them to bring their best expression!

LOST & FOUND SHED
We have quite a collection of items in the Lost & Found Shed located behind the Coach’s Office near the Upper 9th St. gate. Please be sure to check the Lost & Found anytime during dismissal. We have lots of water bottles and lunch bags!
